Ballet Master: Edmund Stripe

StripeEdmund Stripe has been with Alberta Ballet since the 2002/2003 season. Stripe came to Alberta Ballet from Singapore Dance Theatre, where he spent two seasons as ballet master.

Born in Enfield, North London, he trained at the Royal Ballet School, where his distinguished teachers included Nancy Kilgour (now senior pedagogue at the School of Alberta Ballet). As a dancer, he was a soloist with Ballet Gulbenkian (Portugal) and principal dancer with London City Ballet. From 1987-1997, Mr. Stripe was principal dancer and choreographer with West Australian Ballet and was appointed ballet master there in 1998, before joining Singapore Dance Theatre in 2000. He has assisted in the mounting and re-creation of works by such noted choreographers as Jiri Kylian, Nacho Duato, George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, and Christopher Wheeldon.

An award-winning choreographer, Mr. Stripe has created over 30 major works for many international ballet companies. In Canada, His work outside of Alberta Ballet has been seen in collaborations with Calgary Opera and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. He was recently commissioned to choreograph the first dance work to be performed by Alberta Ballet at the newly renovated Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium for Alberta's Centennial Celebrations in September 2005.

Following the outstanding success of his works Unquiet Light and Swelter (Mirage Under a Sheltering Sky), Mr. Stripe will be remounting his first full length work for Alberta Ballet, Alice in Wonderland in this March as well as choreographing the world premiere of The Nutcracker.
