Alberta Ballet Reveals Title of Ballet Inspired by Elton John

Alberta Ballet is proud to announce Love Lies Bleeding, the new official title of the ballet inspired by and set to the music and words of Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Love Lies Bleeding, formerly titled ELTON, premieres in Calgary on May 6, 2010. Choreographer Jean Grand-Maître and a world-class design team will bring to the stage a history making ballet that is sure to set a new benchmark for ballet in Canada.

“Every time something new is born the creators are swept along a fantastic journey”, says Jean Grand-Maître, Artistic Director of Alberta Ballet. “Love Lies Bleeding continues to be an evolving work and throughout the intense creative process of the past 10 months, the ballet’s character finally took on its own life and a new title seemed more appropriate, just as with Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and The Drum.”

Alberta Ballet’s internationally acclaimed roster of powerful dancers will soon soar and give athletic life to many of the 20th century’s most memorable songs. This contemporary semi-abstract ballet is set to 14 of the classic songs composed by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The audience will journey through a series of 14 theatrically dynamic and provocative tableaux into the wild and powerful world of pop music super stardom.

This major world premiere unites a powerful creative team of five designers with Alberta Ballet’s internationally acclaimed Artistic Director/choreographer Jean Grand-Maître, Director of Choreography for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
