Powerful, Genre-Defying Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum Hits Vancouver for Cultural Olympiad 2010
The ballet that has audiences all over the world raving is on Vancouver's stage for the Cultural Olympiad 2010 next January. Joni Mitchell's passionate music mingles with Jean Grand-Maître's explosive choreography in Alberta Ballet's most fearless production, Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre January 22 - 24, 2010. Tickets are on sale Friday, May 15 at ticketmaster.ca.
Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum is one of the select few performances chosen for the VancouverCultural Olympiad 2010. "This is a ballet about the earth, for and about earthlings," said Mitchell, "It celebrates with urgency expressed through poetry, music and athletic pageantry these desperate times and yet, somehow, it leaves the audience grateful for the experience."
Since its premiere in 2007, Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and The Drum has enthralled audiences in New York, Toronto and around the world. A truly genre-defying ballet, it inspired Sir Elton John to have Alberta Ballet Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître create a ballet to his music in the 2009-2010 season.
"Athletically thrilling dance."
- Globe and Mail
"electrifying... a poetic plea for sanity and love in a world of hate and chaos"

This exhilarating ballet also brought Alberta Ballet and Jean Grand-Maître to the forefront of the international arts community with the recent announcement that he will be Choreography Director for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening, Closing and nightly Victory Ceremonies.
