Fresh sense of wonder fills new Nutcracker

The bone-chilling cold of a long wintry blast was forgotten — if only for a few precious hours — in the warmth of life that positively flowed from the stage of the Jubilee Auditorium on Wednesday during the Calgary premiere of Alberta Ballet’s long-awaited new production of The Nutcracker.
Unlike the usual German setting of the work, the $1.5 million refit (designed by Zack Brown) places the story of the young girl Klara — and the embattled nutcracker-turned-prince who whisks her off to a land of grace and enchantment — in the opulent world of turn-of-the-century Imperial Russia.
