PRESTIGIOUS DANCE INITIATIVE CALLS BALLET MASTER
Alberta Ballet's Ballet Master Edmund Stripe has been invited to participate in the prominent National Choreographers Initiative, an exclusive gathering of international choreographers in Los Angeles, California. Every year the Irvine Barclay Theatre together with Molly Lynch, head of the National Choreographers Initiative invites 4 choreographers from across the United States to support and nurture the development of new choreography.
Edmund Stripe is currently in his seventh year as ballet master with Alberta Ballet. Born in Enfield, North London, and trained at the Royal Ballet School, he was a soloist with Ballet Gulbenkian (Portugal) and principal dancer with London City Ballet. As well as Alberta Ballet, he has worked as Ballet Master for West Australian Ballet and Singapore Dance Theatre. For Alberta Ballet he has choreographed Swelter, Unquiet Light, Alice in Wonderland and most recently Piano Concerto #2, Opus 102. This holiday season, he will be choreographing Alberta Ballet's world premiere of The Nutcracker.
The National Choreographers Initiative was originally founded to promote the creation and production of professional dance. Their goal is to create an environment where choreographers can organically work through a dance piece, experimenting while developing their craft.
"I'm delighted and honoured to be invited to participate in this project. Initiatives like this are vitally important to further the art of dance," says Edmund Stripe. "Projects like the National Choreographer Initiative act as a melting pot for new ideas and new approaches. It's a revitalizing experience for any choreographer to share and be exposed to such a variety of vibrant talent."
As well as Alberta Ballet's Edmund Stripe; Ma Cong, Tulsa Ballet; Emery LeCrone; Amy Seiwert Artistic Director of contemporary ballet company im-ij-re will be in attendance. This team of choreographers will be creating new works over a three week period culminating in a performance at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on July 26, 2008.
