Season Message from the Artistic Director

A SEASON OF CULMINATION

Welcome to our 2014-2015 season, and what a treat we have in store for you!

After decades of consistently presenting excellence in dance, I truly believe that this season’s programming, more than any other we have presented before, will become a landmark year for our cherished patrons.

In 2014-2015, Alberta Ballet will reach new heights by showcasing our internationally acclaimed dancers in a series of spectacular ballets, created by the leading dance makers of our time hailing from around the globe.

This year’s superb productions will entertain and touch you unlike any other programming I have produced before. I promise you nothing but delight, excitement, surprise, beauty, passion, and of course breathtaking dance.

Those who love classical ballet will be enthralled by our productions of Don Quixote and David Nixon's The Three Musketeers, as well as by one of North America’s finest ballet companies – Houston Ballet – with their remarkable and opulent presentation of one of classical ballet’s greatest triumphs, La Bayadère: The Temple Dancer.

Those who revel in more contemporary fare will rejoice in the presentation of our brand new Carmen, choreographed by our own Yukihchi Hattori, and in legendary choreographer Jiří Kylián’s poignant and lyrical masterpiece Forgotten Land.

For those who have cultivated a special fondness for our portrait ballets, I invite you to join us as we celebrate one of Canada’s iconic singer-songwriters, Sarah McLachlan, when we present an enhanced Director’s Cut version of our 2011 mega-hit Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, including new songs selected from her much anticipated album to be released shortly.

In December, don’t miss our annual presentation of our lavish multi-million dollar production of Edmund Stripe's The Nutcracker, acclaimed from coast to coast as “one of the most visually seductive versions1 existing in the country at the moment. There is no better way to introduce your children to the magic of the performing arts as they discover the dance, the theatre, the live orchestral music and the young heroes of this immense fairy tale all at once!

In January the world-famous all-male parody ensemble Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo finally makes its first Alberta appearance in over 25 years after having toured to more than 600 cities and performed for the British Royal Family. They are to classical ballet what the Harlem Globe Trotters are to basketball, a mercilessly hilarious phenomenon blending classical ballet virtuosity with goofball comedy of the highest order. They are the living proof of the astounding fact that men can indeed dance on pointe, creating a perfect harmony between virtuosity and humour.

There is something for everyone in this climatic and dazzling season, featuring 33 distinguished dancers handpicked from around the world and a repertoire highlighting five Alberta premieres inspired by history’s greatest heroes and legends.

Come and feel what life is really all about. It’s time for an exhilarating journey unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before.

That’s a promise!
