All you need is faith, trust and a little bit of pixie dust.
Peter Pan is a boy who won’t grow up. Since its inception in 1902, Peter Pan has been adapted in many different ways for the stage and screen, but the heart of the story has never changed.
Alberta Ballet is excited to bring this classic family production to the Jubilee stages in the spring of 2020. Fairytale ballets have become a constant in our repertoire, and we can’t think of a better story to share with the young and young at heart.
Internationally recognized choreographer Septime Webre, Artistic Director of Hong Kong Ballet, first created this critically-acclaimed version of Peter Pan in 2001 for The Washington Ballet where he spent 17 years as Artistic Director. This production holds a special place in his heart and has been a staple throughout North America since its premiere. Much like Alberta Ballet’s Cinderella, there is a wonderful balance of humour, warmth and fantasy in this production. And of course, plenty of flying!
Featuring an original score by composer and Cincinnati Ballet Music Director Carmon DeLeone, Peter Pan promises to deliver the perfect magical experience your family will never forget.
Get lost in the adventures of all of your favourite characters from this classic story - Peter Pan, Wendy, Michael, John, The Lost Boys, Captain Hook and of course, the beloved fairy, Tinkerbell - as they journey through the skies from The Darling residence to Never Never Land. Even Captain Hook’s nemesis, Tick-Tock Croc, makes an appearance.
Peter Pan made his debut in The Little White Bird, a 1902 novel by James Matthew Barrie. Pan then returned two years later to star in Barrie’s play, The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, which became an international sensation after its London premiere. The novel, Peter and Wendy, hit stands in 1911 and remains in print today.
In 1929, Barrie generously gifted the copyright for Peter Pan to the Great Ormand Street Children’s Hospital who still receives royalties from the licensing of Peter Pan stage and screen productions in the U.K., U.S. and Spain. In 1950, Peter Pan hit Broadway with music by Leonard Bernstein, three years before Walt Disney released the animated feature film, Peter Pan.
Over the years, many major ballet companies have staged a version of Peter Pan, and we are so proud to finally be able to as well. Although we invited the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to perform its version of Peter Pan over 10 years ago, it has never been performed by Alberta Ballet. We can’t wait to see our dancers inhabit these loveable characters!
“The story of Peter Pan is a compelling one as it reminds us to live our lives cherishing the child within,” Septime has said.
So, sprinkle on some pixie dust and fly on over to see Alberta Ballet in Peter Pan.
