Alberta Ballet opens its 60th Anniversary Season with Giselle, one of the defining works of the Romantic era and among the most beloved ballets in the classical repertoire. In this brand-new staging by Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia, after the original choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, the ballet’s historic roots are honoured while offering a thoughtful perspective for today’s audiences.
A timeless tale of love and betrayal, Giselle showcases the ethereal beauty that defines Romantic ballet. What begins as a tender story of innocence soon gives way to heartbreak, as Giselle discovers the truth about the man she loves. Set to Adolphe Adam’s evocative score, one of the most celebrated in ballet, the music moves seamlessly from the pastoral to the haunting lyricism, shaping the emotional journey at every turn.
In the moonlit world of the Wilis, spirits of women wronged before their wedding day, the ballet unfolds into one of the most iconic scenes in all of ballet. Themes of forgiveness and redemption resonate throughout the work, carried through expressive storytelling, striking choreography, and a score that lingers long after the final curtain.
Opening our milestone season, Giselle is a powerful reminder of the emotional depth and enduring beauty that have captivated audiences for generations.
