Edmonton, AB – Alberta Ballet opens its 60th Anniversary Season with Giselle, an enduring masterpiece and one of the defining works of ballet’s Romantic era.  

In this new staging by Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia, after the original choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, the ballet’s historic roots are honoured while offering a thoughtful perspective for today’s audiences. 

“Giselle is a cherished masterpiece, with a grandeur and stature to match the milestone of opening Alberta Ballet’s 60th season.” says Ventriglia. “What makes this production especially significant is that it has been created entirely here at Alberta Ballet. From the sets and costumes to the work in the studio and on stage, it reflects the extraordinary skill and artistry within Alberta Ballet.” 

Giselle showcases the ethereal beauty that defines Romantic ballet. What begins as a tender story of innocence soon gives way to heartbreak. Act I retains the familiar narrative of the classic but brings the village to life with a fresh approach to character, energy and theatricality. Set to Composer Adolphe Adam’s evocative score, one of the most celebrated in ballet, distinctive musical themes weave through the story, echoing and evolving as the drama unfolds. 

Among the most enduring images in this iconic ballet is the second act’s moonlit world of the Wilis, spirits of women wronged before their wedding day. For Alberta Ballet, the scene also becomes a showcase for the dancers, costumes and stagecraft that shape this new production. 

“I had a vision for this Giselle, but our incredible team has gone far beyond what I imagined,” says Ventriglia. “The creativity and dedication of our technical and wardrobe teams have brought so much to this production. And our dancers have given these characters such life and emotion. I could not be prouder of what we have created together.”
